iND| RKP FI by BBS Motorsport

Most E9x M3 fans still remember when the BBS FI wheel finally made its appearance in the US.

As a wheel manufacturer that can proudly refer to a 44 year history of building the world’s finest wheels BBS has no need to boast heavily, make sensational statements, or cause controversy to market their wheels. In spite of this, when the BBS FI was released to market the new wheel redefined the performance wheel for the entire industry, pushed the envelope of light weight and high strength, and inspired dozens of copies and replicas and homages from small and large wheel manufacturers all across the world.

It is safe to say that the BBS FI is truly a pinnacle wheel, and stands head and shoulders above the rest of the wheel industry.

The FI has been available in 19 inch and 20 inch applications, but Germany’s RKP brand felt that the performance potential of this great wheel had not yet been maximized. To that end, RKP has created a special version of the FI wheel in an 18 inch diameter. The 18 inch FI wheel allows M3 fans to use many popular sizes of ultra high performance and racing tires, and breaks new ground with its incredibly low weight. The 18 inch FI wheels weight in at a scant 16.50 lbs in front and 17lbs in the rear for maximum performance while maintaining excellent rigidity. The 18 inch FI wheels are in stock now at IND and ready for custom paint in any finish imaginable.

IND | RKP Akrapovic X-Pipe Adapter

Published on February 7, 2014 by in Uncategorized
IND | RKP Akrapovic X-Pipe Adapter

Akrapovic was founded nearly two decades ago by Slovenian motorcycle racer Igor Akrapovic, and has enjoyed immense growth since the company’s inception. Akrapovic has invested millions into their facility and produces all Carbon Fiber and Titanium products in house. The state-of-the-art facility houses autoclaves, mandrel benders, tube extrusion equipment, laser cutters, multi-axis CNC machines, and much more. Akrapovic’s engineering team has created many factory-original applications for manufacturers like Porsche and Alpina. The Akrapovic “X” pipe incorporates high flow 100 cpsi sports catalysts and integrated resonators. With a weight savings of nearly 40lbs over the factory x-pipe, it is no secret the Akrapovic x-pipe is a highly sought after piece. Unfortunately, Slovenia designed this piece so that it is only compatible with their rear section. For enthusiasts that already have a different rear section or would like to install this x-pipe with the factory rear section, RKP has designed an adapter that effectively mates the Akrapovic titanium x-pipe with any rear section that utilizes the factory ball flange.

  • Built in Germany
  • Billet aluminum
  • Includes a set of titanium adapters for installation

As an authorized dealer of Akrapovic we are able to package these with either the standard high flow catted x-pipe or the infamous GT4 x-pipe.

First look! 3D Design F32 4 Series

The Tokyo Auto Salon is regarded as one of the most infamous auto shows on the planet. It cover approximately 70,000 square meters of everything the automotive world has to offer. Not only does TAS offer a guide to automotive hardware, but also culture. From the more wild walks of life to the more subtle, taking a look around TAS and assessing photos is similar to reading a style guide on cars, if one such definitive guide was in existence. It is also no surprise that 3D Design chose TAS 2014 to debut their most recent creation, the F32 4 series program. The 3D Design F32 M-sport kit features a urethane or carbon fiber front lip, optional carbon fiber lower splitters, urethane trunk spoiler, and carbon fiber rear diffuser. The program also offers a quad tip exhaust system built by Arqray Japan.

The official release of the kit is scheduled for the 3rd week of January. For additional questions please contact us directly.

All photos taken during roll in. Thread will be updated with more photos as TAS 2014 continues. Enjoy

Green Hell returns! (Falken Tire commercial)

As some fans of IND’s Green Hell know, this amazing M3 was left in IND’s care nearly two years ago, when its owner (a former Chicago resident) relocated some 10,000 miles away to Sydney Australia. Not one to let a performance machine sit, Sam, the owner of Green Hell has graciously allowed IND to do something truly unique with this M3.

Earlier this summer, IND had the unique opportunity to bring Green Hell to California’s Chuckwalla raceway, and to give Falken pro driver Dai Yoshihara a turn behind the wheel of this IND Portfolio M3. Dai did some incredible things with this car, which Falken Tire very kindly captured on film for us.

Enjoy the video!

Bolt in roll cages by Fall Line Motorsports from IND!

GTR Roll Bar Shown

Fall Line Motorsports has earned their reputation as one of the premier BMW race car manufacturers by investing over one and a half decades of dedication and hard work. The experience housed within Fall Line’s facility walls is a nearly universal collection of racing knowledge, encompassing everything from suspension design and engineering to engine design, to world-class safety systems.

Fall Line’s work is typically restricted to complete race car builds, but today IND Distribution, a long standing partner of Fall Line Motorsports, is proud to introduce Fall Line’s new GTS and GTR bolt in roll bars.

These roll bars were engineered in house at Fall Line Motorsports based on a combination of prior experience both with designing complete roll cages for SCCA, NASA and Grand Am race classes, and with the added experience of designing half roll bars for IND’s numerous mixed use street/track projects.

Each roll bar is manufactured from mandrel bent chromoly steel with an .095” wall thickness, and is available pre-painted by IND in any color scheme possible. A GTR variant is available with a gusseted cross brace for exceptional strength.

RKP F10 M5 “McRae” Splitters are here!

The RKP F10 M5 splitters were a true labor of love. More than just an exterior accessory to enhance the look of F10 M5s all over the world, the new RKP splitters allowed us to create an idea that originated directly in the enthusiast community. Although playing a role in the creation of a new part is always exciting, taking a component from an M5 fan’s mind, creating a prototype, and finally producing a finished product has been especially rewarding.

The RKP splitters for the F10 M5 were designed to mimic BMW’s own Performance splitters for the E9x M3 chassis cars, but, with RKP’s usual attention to detail and design the base part is enhanced to respect the original body lines of the M5. Special attention was paid to the sharp crease present in the side openings of the M5 bumper, and a sweeping transition gives the splitter a complex but elegant reflection in any light.

The splitter is available in 1×1 plain weave, 2×2 twill weave, pre-painted in any color and a host of custom options. Each splitter installs to the M5 bumper with double sided tape along the top edge, and by re-using original BMW mounting hardware along the bottom for perfect fit and an extremely secure installation. The splitters are incredibly flexible and light, but are reinforced in critical mounting areas with 12k woven carbon for additional strength.

Dear M5 enthusiasts, please enjoy the first photos of your M5Post designed RKP splitters!

The splitters can be viewed on the IND website below:

IND’s tour of BBS’ head facility!

Published on November 25, 2013 by in BMW

Many of you have already seen this year’s IND trip to Germany, found in this thread:

Today we are proud to release an appendix to that story. This portion of our tour could not be published with the rest of the story, as this facility contains machinery and equipment so secret that every single photo had to be reviewed prior to this writing. I present to M3Post a truly rare treat- a tour of the original BBS manufacturing facility.

The BBS Shiltach facility is a true piece of history; even the company’s name is a combination of its two founders and their home town – Baumgartner, Brand, and the city of Schiltach. What started as a humble facility responsible for manufacturing plastic exterior components grew quickly into a company that literally invented the racing wheel as we know it today. This facility has expanded over the years, to the point where the adjacent river had to be moved to accommodate the growth. Although BBS has additional manufacturing facilities in Germany, the Schiltach facility is where it all began. It is proof that two people with a commitment to being the best and a belief in their mission can truly accomplish anything.

Of course, the first things we saw on display at BBS were wheels. Our eyes darted from one display wheel to another, as BBS exhibited everything from the classic BBS RS, to a CH in an incredible gold finish, to BBS Formula 1 wheels.

BBS wheel manufacturing begins at a point that few other wheel companies ever see- directly at the raw material stage. Where most manufacturers purchase pre-“forged” blanks from manufacturers in China, Taiwan, and other facilities, BBS goes much further. BBS does not even use pre-mixed aluminum alloy, but rather imports each individual element, and creates a unique alloy proprietary to BBS. This is the only way to maintain the standard of quality BBS requires. The large stacks of material in the first photo are raw aluminum, while the piece held in the last photo of this sequence is a block of raw magnesium. BBS purchases Silicon, Iron, Copper, Magnesium, Manganese, Chromium, Zinc, and other raw materials to create their proprietary alloys.

One can feel the heat radiating from BBS’ furnaces as you approach, and I personally was left with a feeling of awe at the true industrial manufacturing power that BBS held at its fingertips.

After the materials are combined to form an alloy, extensive testing is conducted to ensure that the alloy is absolutely pure and contains the appropriate mixture of elements for the desired metallurgical properties. In the last photo of this set, a sample is being prepared for a mass spectrometer to analyze the contents of the sample.

The completed alloy travels to one of these machines, where it undergoes a high pressure casting process that ensures an excellent material density, lower porosity, and better grain structure alignment than standard low pressure cast wheels.

This photo is of a casting tool made for a very famous BBS wheel- the classic BBS CH. I’m sure most of you can recognize the CH spoke shape, even when it’s viewed as a negative.

Once a wheel comes out of casting the remaining casting flash is removed and the wheel is x rayed for excessive porosity and poor material density. The x ray’s initial review is judged by machine which substantially increases the precision and sensitivity with which a wheel can be reviewed, but if a flaw is found the machine operator is alerted and each potential flaw is reviewed by a person. To maintain the highest level of quality the x ray operator shifts are only four hours long, which preserves the operator’s focus and attention to detail.

After the wheels are approved they move through a series of additional processes which we unfortunately can’t show in detail. The wheels are de-burred and cleaned, and then move to flow forming. A careful look at the wheel barrels in the photos above will reveal that the barrels are quite narrow in width, and very thick in wall thickness. This is because after the wheel is through its high pressure casting process, the barrel section goes through flow forming. During flow forming two die draw the barrel downwards and literally force the metal into its finished width. Flow forming uses extreme pressure to form the barrel, which results in an excellent density and much better grain alignment than even a standard high pressure casting, resulting in an incredibly strong wheel that can be sold for a very reasonable price.

Finally, BBS wheels are heat treated and annealed, an extra step not taken by many manufacturers, which normalizes the grain structure and therefore further improves the strength of the wheel.

Walking around the BBS Schiltach facility leaves one thing clear- the sheer volume of wheels produced at Schiltach is absolutely staggering. Responsible for two thousand wheels per day, pallet after pallet of completed wheels await finishing and occupy thousands of square feet of storage space. The amount of production just this one BBS facility is capable of was truly a shock.

While most of the wheels move through BBS’ specialized paint process, shown in the first image above, some lucky wheels do encounter the pink ceramic pellets in the last photo. BBS’ ceramic polishing process creates a mirror-like finish that is incredibly striking.

Thank you very much to our friends at BBS for showing us the BBS facility!

A return to roots: IND visits Germany once again.

Being a member of the IND team offers many amazing opportunities- we’re able to work with some of the best people in the aftermarket and racing industry. We are also blessed to have some of the most fascinating, friendly clients in any industry anywhere. And finally, every once in a while we get unparalleled access to racing and car culture, only afforded to us by our positions at IND. We are truly fortunate people. One of our favorite perks of the job is our semi-annual trip to Germany.

Although travelling to Germany is not an excellent business investment in standard terms, for a company built around love for BMW M, there is no other way. It is possible to have a concept of the things that inspire IND from the comfort of the US, but to maintain our sense of purpose, to renew our drive; we must go and feel the country that made BMW M for ourselves. And so, as we have done so many times before, we made our plans for a pilgrimage to Germany. Our stops this year were a veritable who’s who of racing legends- KK Automotive; The Nurburgring, Eisenmann, BBS Motorsport.

Each stop allows us to plan for the future, while strengthening our resolve. Our mission as a business is not the easiest, and it is not the shortest path to financial gain. Our visits remind us of who we are, and why IND must do things in the best way, not the easiest or the most quick. Please follow us on our tour of the home country of BMW M.

As always, our trip starts in historic Heidelberg and the Heidelberg Suites hotel. This hotel has been IND’s home away from home for five years now, and its location and incredible view are unique. Set directly on the Neckar River, this hotel has an incredible view of the Old Bridge and Heidelberg Castle, along with Heidelberg’s old downtown district. This incredible town is an excellent home base for anyone interested in visiting the Nurburgring, and the Porsche manufacturing plant in Stuttgart. Even the BMW Welt in Munich is a three hour drive, making Heidelberg an easy 2-3 hours away from incredible automotive culture and history.
